Question about buying Morgan silver dollars?

Hi, my son collects Morgan dollars and has been attempting to assemble a complete set for a few years now. I want to purchase a coin for him for Christmas and have a couple questions. He is currently buying the ones minted in Carson City. He usually buys high grade coins, or the highest he can find for the price he can afford. I know he has bought several and sent them to have them graded and slabbed. He needs a 1889 CC, and I would like to buy him one. I understand this is a rare coin and can demand a hefty price in nice condition. I have seen several on ebay that are going between 1 and 2K. I need some advice on how I should pursue this, so I can avoid getting ripped off. If I can find one on EBAY from someone with good feedback and offers a money back guarantee that would be nice. Any advice on price, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I know he usually only buys coins that have been graded by one of two of three companies he says are trustworthy.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying coins on eBay that are graded by PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG. But the price premium you will pay for PCGS and NGC grades is worth it in future value, as those two are the most favored in the marketplace when it’s time to sell. PCGS has a bit of an edge on NGC.

But there are other places to look, too, where you can buy at auction below dealer prices. These two require registering with the site, and both have buyer’s premiums on top of the winning bid, so you will need to keep that in mind when bidding. Sometimes you will do better than eBay, sometimes eBay is better.

For $1K to 2K, you’ll get coins in a range from Fine 20 to Very Fine 35 in PCGS and NGC holders, or coins with problems that appear much higher in grade, slabbed by ANACS or NCS (the sister service to NGC that certifies authenticity but states only the details condition, not an actual grade).

Finding an 1889CC in AU grades is a lot harder, and they will start at over $4000. Finding one in Mint State is very hard, and recent sales at Heritage have them going for $20K and up.

Always look at eBay sold prices and not so much at what people are asking. You have many dealers on eBay that run stores with overpriced coins on perpetual ‘sale’, hoping to snag a sucker.
